Abstract

In an era marked by digital saturation, mobile devices have become both lifelines and landmines in the terrain of family life. This study investigates the paradoxical role of mobile technology in shaping familial dynamics—do these devices enhance connection, or do they quietly cultivate isolation? Anchored on Family Systems Theory, Media Richness Theory, and Technoference Theory, the research examines four critical dimensions: emotional bonding, collaborative app design, ritual disruption, and the consequences of screen overuse. Employing a systematic review methodology, the study synthesizes data from peer-reviewed literature, and analysis draws from qualitative interviews, longitudinal surveys, ethnographic design research, and psychological studies spanning diverse cultural contexts. Findings reveal that mobile devices, when used intentionally, can deepen intergenerational bonds, facilitate emotional co-presence, and support collaborative engagement through thoughtfully designed applications. However, unchecked device use often disrupts family rituals, fractures real-time interaction, and contributes to a phenomenon termed “technoference”—the chronic interruption of relationships by screens. Emotional withdrawal, strained parent-child communication, and reduced relational satisfaction were recurring themes. The study concludes that mobile technology is not inherently divisive or connective; its influence is contingent upon the use context, family atmosphere, and design intention. Recommendations include creating tech-free zones,
developing family-centric applications, and instituting digital literacy policies. This research contributes to an evolving understanding of digital life, urging a recalibration of mobile device use to sustain family cohesion in an increasingly connected yet emotionally fragmented world.
