Abstract

This study examined the knowledge and availability of e-learning facilities in Nigerian universities within the Benin Metropolis. Using a descriptive survey research design, data were collected from 300 students and 100 academic staff across public and private universities through a structured questionnaire. The instrument was validated through content and face validation by experts in educational technology and measurement and evaluation. It yielded reliability coefficients of 0.86, 0.89, and 0.82 for the respective sections of the questionnaire using Cronbach’s alpha. Data analysis involved descriptive statistics, with means and standard deviations used to evaluate responses. Findings revealed a moderate level of e-learning facility provision and knowledge of e-learning tools among respondents. However, significant barriers, including limited access to resources, insufficient technical support, inadequate staff training, unreliable internet connectivity, poor electricity supply, and high costs of devices and internet access, hinder effective e-learning adoption. These challenges were consistent across both public and private institutions, highlighting systemic issues rather than ownership differences. The study recommends investments in reliable infrastructure, continuous staff and student training, the development of comprehensive e-learning policies, and increased funding through internal and external partnerships to address these challenges and enhance e-learning in Nigerian universities.
