Abstract

There are various dimensions in the study of philosophy of science; however less attention has been given by philosophers in the study of the philosophy of Microbiology. While Microbiology is the scientific study of microorganisms, philosophy of microbiology is the study of the influence of microbes on man, nature and the environment. This paper using the works of Maureen O’Malley’s Philosophy of Microbiology, carries out an epistemic analysis of this influence on man, nature and the environment. Epistemically O’Malley was able to prove that there is a correlation between microbial and man, and that the correlation is symbiotic to the point of affecting human identity and his environment. The study argued that although the science of these organisms is very significant, its claims of influence need to be further explored. The paper concludes that the knowledge generated in the study of microbial will not only expatiate the knowledge of man and his environment, but also improve the understanding of knowledge of human nature and the basis of the interaction to nature and the value for his environment.
