Abstract
Urhoboland, which is part of Nigeria’s Niger-Delta region, like other parts, is afflicted by various social and environmental problems. These problems include soil erosion, deforestation, gas flaring with oil spillage leading to marine and land/atmospheric pollution, poverty, poor management of domestic and chemical waste, banditry, herdsmen-farmers conflicts, etc. Many of these problems instigate situations of social and environmental injustice as people are either denied or deprived of their human rights, and their dignity is suppressed. This paper uses a critical analytic and hermeneutic method to interpret the key concepts and examine the issues raised. The paper finds social and environmental injustice in Urhoboland of the Niger-Delta. The paper argues that the biblical doctrine of the jubilee year can serve to inspire praxis for social and environmental justice in Urhoboland. It concludes that if this is done, it will help to create a more peaceful and harmonious Urhoboland.
