Abstract
Election is one of the effective means through which citizens in a democratic dispensation take part in the governance process; it is the most distinguishing political tool possessed by citizens to ensure that the government responds to their needs and enhances their well-being. These elections are often manipulated through the use of other methods to win, and as such, election results do not reflect the popular wishes of the electorate. The purpose of this paper is to assess the opportunities and challenges of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in providing free, fair and credible elections in Nigeria. The paper employs a descriptive research methodology and relies on secondary sources of data; the collated information is subjected to content analysis for rigorous examination. The findings of the paper showed that the Nigerian State did abandon the opportunities of AI technology that enhances the credibility of elections but leverages on its challenges of deepfakes to spread disinformation during elections and circumvent electoral norms, thus hindering citizens from holding elected officials accountable in order to improve their wellbeing. It was recommended that the federal government and all relevant stakeholders implore the use of AI technology to enhance the credibility of elections. The paper also
recommended that the Nigerian State and non-state actors should come up with bills for the National Assembly to legislate a legal framework that guards and regulates the use of AI in the country. The study concludes that the abandonment of technology that enhances the credibility of elections invariably affects the well-being of citizens.
