Abstract
The Yoruba is one of the major ethnic groups in Nigeria, a country that is plagued with religious tensions and hostilities. The country adopts no religion in principle but in practice, recognizes mainly Christianity and Islam while neglecting the traditional religions and others. The Yoruba through its regional government, which is based on its cultural values, has been able to recognize and give a sense of belonging to all the religions within its borders. Omọlúàbí ethos is foundational to Yoruba culture and embodies values such as integrity, kindness, and communal respect. In the traditional Yoruba society, these values served as a unifying factor and fostered a culture of socio-religious tolerance. The Yoruba region within Nigeria is the most peaceful despite its religious diversity. However, in recent times, socio-religious tensions within Yoruba communities have been exacerbated due to the erosion of these principles. This research argues that the re-emergence of the Omọlúàbí ethos can mitigate religious tensions, promote respect across socio-religious boundaries, and enhance communal relationships. This study emphasises the significance of cultural renewal in tackling contemporary socio-religious issues by presenting Omọlúàbí as a moral and ethical framework for social cohesion and peaceful coexistence in religiously diverse societies.
